According to a report in today’s Times Herald Record, the village of Kiryas Joel is again the fastest-growing municipality in all of New York, breaking the 20,000 barrier for the first time. Census figures to be released reveal that the village grew just less than 10 percent in 2005-06 to 20,071 residents. The addition of 1,794 people put it at the top of the state’s 1,684 localities in population change.
Village Administrator Gedalye Szegedin, attributed the village population change to marriages and births, and as a result, the village population continues to boom, driving the demand for more infrastructure, housing and services. Szegedin said his village could keep its growth contained within its 1.1 square miles by using 70 acres of vacant land off Nininger Road to build more houses.

Truly wonderful news. All Jews are wonderful.
The potential problem here lies in the amount of total tax dollars (on a Federal/State and local level) generated by these 20,071 inhabitants.
If you think the US government is going to continue to give a free ride ( Section 8 housing, Medicaid, WIC, etc, etc ) as the population doubles and triples and quadruples- you’re in a delusional reality world.
Unfortunely we are sowing the seeds for a potential Holocaust here in the USA and our leaders/Rabbis are at fault for not anticipating a potential serious anti-semitism problem in the years to come.
A population that exists in an undergound economy (cash) and does not pay it’s share fare (in taxes) to society at large, is doomed to failure.
America is a great, benevolent country, but going forward there will be limits to America’s benevolence.
modern orth: as big as KY is – it is still only taking maybe 1000th of 1% of what combined totals of inhabitants of East NY, Newark, Bronx, Chicago. LA etc., etc, plus it is much safer and does have many businesses who pay heavy taxes and make large contributions to society at large. Additionally, had Satmar not developed Williamsburg, it would have been turned into part of Brownsville, Bed Stuy, Bushwick. Now look at WillyB – which neighborhood do u think US govt is more proud of??
Reply to Himmelstein:
1) East NY, Chicago, Newark, Bronx, LA etc. are core feeders to the US ARMY that protects all of us. KY does not pay with blood, those neighborhoods do. Look at any newspaper and see whose dying in Iraq.
2) There are several large business in KY and WillyB that are producing tax revenue. They are not the problem. The underground (cash) economy is.
3) I think the KY and Willy B growth is great. They are restocking the Jewish people 60 years after the Shoah. But we are still minority “guests” here in this country. Guests at any Hotel pay the tab, the Hotel does not pay them.
M.O. stick to the forst line of your post and forget all the negativety/stupidity of the rest of your post. How Kiryas Yoel increasing in population (young couples getting married and having large families) is “sowing the seeds for a potential Holocaust” is beyond understanding.
If i was the YW editor, I would have left in your first line and edited out the rest.
With all due respect “modern orthodox”, just take into account the money the government saves, just on not paying for education Since they have privet schools (except for the disabled) while collecting millions in property taxes, that is basically understood as being a tax to fund education .
Hi “Modern Orthodox”
Do you posess first-hand knowledge of the “underground” (cash) economy of Kiryas Joel?
Or are all Kiryas Joel residents guilty by association?
Not a “modern” or an “orthodox” point of view!
MO: Just come out of your cave and say what you think: There are too many Chasidim.
As mentioned above by other commentators, the Jews there take less in government welfare than nearly any of the thousands of minority neighborhoods. In addition, the Jews there do not utilize many government entitlements, most notably they forgo for the most part free public education. That alone costs millions and millions if they were to have utilized it, as is there right.
modern,
there are many anti-semitic websites you would be at home at and feel more comfortable with than yw. Why bring your rants here?
Facts are readily available from multiple sources.
Good luck in your research.
Edited by Site Moderation Panel: ……..To all those wondering……he had a referencing the very anti-Semitic NY Times….no links allowed.
please start to write the commments in yidish or in loshon kodosh so more pepole can understand
tanks to all of you
remember 1 of the reason’s of geiles mitzreiyim is שלא שינו את לשונם

Modern Orthodox – I find your opinion that we are “causing” another Holocaust to be very disturbing, and I won’t ask you about what you believe to be the cause of the Holocaust. I will say this: Let’s leave the anti-Semitism to the anti-Semites.
hey mo dox
remember what the holy satmar roov R Yoel ztvk’l would say to you “beard beard wheres your jew”
keep that in mind before you start bashin chasidim who are a big part of the chain of continuity of the real jewish way of life!!!!!
and i am a litvak
1) I love all Jews regardless of background.
2) There has been no Galus as good to us as this American Galus. My belief- if our populations continue to explode and we don’t pay our fair share of taxes, or we fraud the system ( fraudlent Medicaid, houses exempt from property taxes because they are so called “houses of worship”, etc, etc. ) we will overstay our welcome in this society and the POTENTIAL for another antisemitic disaster increases.
If you don’t recognize this, you are blind to reality.
A final thought ( I wonder if the editor will publish this ).
This data is readily available on the Internet:
KJ-2005 median household income 18,300
median house hold value 370,000
NYC 2005- median household income 49,000
median household value 258,000
Now explain to me how an 18,000 income affords a 370,000 house.
also explain to me why average KJ property taxes are only 3,500.
This is published, readily available data on the Internet. It is not anti-Chasid, it is a reality check for those who don’t see how this breeds antisemitism.
MODERN – Pure lies (and loshon hora.) Satmar people are from the biggest balei tzeduka AND balei chesed (Hatzolah, Bikur Cholim, etc. were founded by them.)
And this hogwash that they don’t pay their fair share of taxes is just that–hogwash (lies and loshon hora.)
And keep your anti-semitic sources in the liberal Jew-hating media to yourself. They are as reliable as the Protocols of Zion.
The fact is Jews pay more than the average Americans in taxes and use less in Government services.
MODERN- Your hatred of your fellow Jew blinds your view.
In KY they don’t forgo the public schools as they have their own district.
Our sages have said that the last era of galus Edom will resemble Galus Yavan when the Jews themselves were the cause/result of the churban/shoah. How bitter sweet it is to be witness to the fulfillment of their words. V’hamayvin yavin. M.O.: We love you as a brother. We also care for you. We respect you for remaining true to our Torah inspite of all the tests/temptations tha must face you in the “outside” world.
All that you say about the “cash” economy may be correct or not. That is up to those who make Torah their lives – the einei HaEidah — to decide. But your negativity disturbs me/us far more than your opinion of the halachah. Perhaps you asked a gadol, perhaps not. Perhaps you asked and then decided. Perhaps you decided and then asked. Regardless. But the fact you can post this hatred and intolerance is very disturbing.
baki – The district only has a PS for the disabled children. 99%+ uses private schools.
MO – This stuff about cash is hooey.
MO
I’ll ask you again where’s your proof?
To M.O.: I think you make a good point. I think it depends on what is muttar al pi Halachah. In other words, I don’t believe that what you describe does in and of itself cause anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism exists, and will be with us until Moshiach comes. Halachah biyedu’a, says Rashi, Esiav soneh liYaakov.
However, when we keep the Torah, we are protected from it. When we don’t, chas v’sholom, then we have to fear.
If this “cash economy” you allege exists, and it is al pi Halachah, then there is no reason to fear. If it is against Halachah, then there’s a problem. But the problem is not that it will cause anti-Semitism. The problem in that case would be that it is against Halachah.
As a big Rebbe used to say: “If you fear Hashem, that is good. If you don’t fear Hashem, that’s all the more reason to be afraid!”
Keep on growing KY, try to befriend your neighbors, it makes for easier living in Galus.
MO – I’m with you on many points and I don’t doubt that you can see that some of your opponents here are just spewing ridiculosities because they can’t understand the issue (leave the anti-semitism to the anti semites? is that a reason to not try and avoid inciting anti-semitism?). But really, why waste your time here? People come to this site to play pundit – not to listen to one.
Thanks YW
MO: You can keep your anti-semitic-loving so-called proof to yourself. Do you have any idea how many people RENT in KJ? Do you know how many of there houses are owned/bought by the parents and not the resident?
Your anti-hasidic bias clouds your views of the facts.
M.O. On your comment:Quote” also explain to me why average KJ property taxes are only 3,500″, I will explain to you, the fact that the Village leaders have not raised taxes in many many years shows a fiscal responsibility from them unlike ANY other village in the nation!! Please read previous “Times Herald Record” articles (I google’d them) and you will read for yourself these facts! Although The main reason for not raising taxes is that most KJ residents send their kids in private schools and the biggest reason of raising taxes is usually because of school taxes I.E. Education costs rising to the roof, it is neverthless the responsible village leaders who could have used many excuses to raise taxes for other causes but they are not doing that, so M.O. Here lies your answer for not raising taxes. #1 True Torah Leadership!!!
