Obama On Weiner: If It Were Me, I’d Resign

President Barack Obama said in an exclusive TODAY show interview that if he were Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, he would resign.

“I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign,’’ Obama told Ann Curry in an interview for air Tuesday.

“When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can’t serve as effectively as you need to, at the time when people are worrying about jobs, and their mortgages, and paying the bills — then you should probably step back,’’ Obama said.

The comments are the first public remarks from the president on the Weiner scandal.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called for Weiner to quit, as did several other Democrats, including party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

House officials have also launched an ethic investigation. They said the inquiry is not yet extensive, and committee leaders have not indicated whether they will order a more intensive staff investigation. The officials requested anonymity because the committee has not announced the staff inquiry.

If Weiner does resign, the committee would no longer have jurisdiction to investigate him. If he remains in Congress, Chairman Jo Bonner of Alabama and ranking Democrat Linda Sanchez of California could name a four-member subcommittee to conduct a more thorough investigation. That could lead to an ethics trial.

If the committee decides that a member violated the rules, its options include issuing a written rebuke, recommending the House vote to censure the lawmaker or recommending expelling the member by a two-thirds majority.

  1. big talker! He didn’t resign when they questioned his citizenship which is an actual qualification to be president.

  2. From what I have seen of Mrs. Obama, if he pulled a stunt like Weiner’s, he’ld not only have to resign, but go into hiding as well.

  3. Obama and Oscar are both toasted.both have too much relish on their buns.Tums or Zantak can not repair the burns that are self afflicted.

  4. No. 1: People have been digging against Obama since he announced his candidacy, and all they have dug up that is actually provable is that he was born in Hawaii in 1961.

No. 2: Have you heard that the President has a birth certificate showing that he was born in the US? The accusations against him were false?

No. 5: To answer your first question: Many of them were probably partying with Republican then-Congressman Vitter of Louisiana, who was a leader in the floor fight to impeach President Clinton, and later became (i) according to his public confession, a customer of the “DC Madam”, and (ii) a Senator from Louisiana. Me – I was looking forward to Clinton’s resignation or removal, and his succession by VP Al Gore. (That succession was not to happen, whether by impeachment, resignation or Gore’s electoral victory in 2000.)

Now, let’s hear your answer to your second question.
