TONIGHT ON YWN RADIO – Mordechai Weinberger: How Parents Suffering From Depression, Anxiety, & Control Affect Their Children

Mordechai Weinberger, noted LCSW, will once again begin broadcasting his weekly radio show, now exclusively on YWN Radio.

The program, which will take phone calls, will air from 8:30PM – 9:30PM, and listeners will have a chance to win $200.

Mordechai has previously hosted the Pomegranate Family Hour on the radio, with an audience of over 50,000 people per show. By popular demand, he is returning, and will be broadcasting on YWN to attempt to reach people around the globe, and not just in the local listening area.

The topic for this week’s show is “How parents suffering from depression, anxiety, and control affect their children”. He will offer 6 points to identify if you’re family member is controlling and 12 tips in dealing with this situation.

He has received the following emails regarding this topic:

My grandmother suffers from anxiety. When we take a family trip she is nervous that something should happen to us. She demands every child and grandchild call her once if not twice a week. If we don’t call, she immediately assumes something is wrong and she starts a barrage of phone calls to everyone that something is wrong with this person and why are we keeping secrets from her. All my years I accepted this and moved on in life. I have recently gotten married and my wife pointed out to me that my grandmother is controlling and not really suffering from anxiety. We must name the kids after her parents first because she suffers from anxiety. We must not speak to people she doesn’t like. We must shop in the grocery she says because she convinced them to give her 10% off. We must run a shidduch by her first and if she doesn’t like the family we aren’t allowed to take the shidduch. I realized my wife is right. The problem is that my family doesn’t agree with me and they say I’m being chutzpadik to question Bobby.

My father suffers from depression. He hasn’t worked in years. My mother is always defending him saying that anyone who loses a parent at such a young age, as my father did, would surely be depressed. When I advise my mother to get him professional help, she says that a wife is supposed to support her husband and not challenge him. My problem is that I see all my siblings have issues as a result of my father’s depression. One brother doesn’t start his day before 1 pm. Another brother just seems scattered with no goal, no structure.
At the shabbos table we all talk about how tough the world is. Or how the wealthy are mean and selfish. I was lucky and had a rebbe that took me under his wings. He taught me how to be assertive and have self-esteem. I am b”h successful in my life with chavrusas and learning. Is there anything I can do to help my family? They see the whole world through the eyes of a weak person. My father never taught my family how to be assertive and how to reach our goals. Can I help at all?

At the end of the program he will open up the phone lines for people to call and ask any emotional question.

“Torah Education’ is the sponsor of this month’s programs. They’re donating $200 for the winning questions.
