$7.5 Million Renovation To 18th Avenue Park Now Complete With New Bathroom

Brooklyn- Councilman David G. Greenfield is thrilled to announce that the renovation of the 18th Avenue / Gravesend Park is officially complete after the opening of a brand-new restroom area this past weekend.

Greenfield is making history by renovating every single park in his district, having secured $35 million to do so. Of his many parks projects, the 18th Avenue Park, which stretches from 55th to 58th Street in Boro Park, may be his most ambitious, and it serves thousands of patrons every single week.

The $7.5 million renovation includes completely new landscaping with hundreds of new trees and better lighting, as well as a larger seating area with 50 new benches. The park also includes new basketball and handball courts, new baseball fields, and several new playgrounds with new swing sets and a variety of play and even musical play equipment. All in, the entire park has now been renovated.

The 18th Avenue Park may also be Greenfield’s most personal project, as the Councilman grew up nearby. “I spent years playing at this park when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I spent much of my time waiting for the play equipment to be available because the park was so poorly designed. This is the place that inspired me to renovate all 13 parks and playgrounds in my district,” Greenfield said. “Now it’s one of the most amazing parks in New York City, and it’s been completely renovated right in time for summer.”

Ground was first broken on Gravesend Park in 2015, and the new playgrounds opened to the public in 2016 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Greenfield, State Senator Simcha Felder, then-Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey, and Community Board 12 District Manager Barry Spitzer.

“All last year, people have been telling me how much they have enjoyed this park,” Greenfield said. “I really get such nachas seeing parents, children and seniors enjoying this park every single day. And here’s the best news: we are in the process of renovating 12 additional parks and playgrounds in Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst.”
