Secretary of State Charlie Summers on Wednesday ordered the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles to remove the license plate “Gestapo” from circulation, according to a local rabbi.
Rabbi Akiva Herzfeld of Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh in Portland said he called the Secretary of State’s office to inform them that he saw the plate on a Maine vehicle and asked that they remove the plate because it was offensive and frightening.
Summers called Herzfeld in person to say that he was immediately ordering that the plate be withdrawn from circulation.
