Israel Police are reviewing a complaint filed by United Torah Judaism chairman MK Yitzchak Goldknopf against former Arad Mayor Nisan Ben Hamo over remarks he made about the Chareidi community, according to a report by Kikar HaShabbas.
In an official response sent to Goldknopf’s office following his appeal to Police Commissioner Danny Levy, the police’s Investigations and Intelligence Division confirmed that the request to open a criminal investigation into Ben Hamo on suspicion of incitement against the Chareidi public has been forwarded to the relevant professional authorities for examination.
The letter stated that police are not taking a position on the substance of the allegations at this stage and thanked Goldknopf for his inquiry.
The complaint stems from remarks made by Ben Hamo amid protests involving Gerrer Chassidim in Arad. In a video he published, Ben Hamo said: “When I said we need to launch an urban intifada, some people objected — this is the meaning. If we do not stand on our hind legs, we will get it many times over.”
In his complaint, Goldknopf argued that the use of the term “intifada” went beyond legitimate public criticism and constituted a direct call for violence, public disorder, and endangering human life. He urged police to examine the remarks on the criminal level and determine whether they warrant a formal investigation.
Police have not announced whether a criminal probe will be opened, but confirmed that the matter is currently under review by the Investigations and Intelligence Division.
