Ministry Ends International Rates for Cell Phones at Borders

The Ministry of Communications has informed cellular telephone providers in Israel that the long standing practice of roaming for cell clients near the Egyptian and Jordanian borders is no longer acceptable.

For anyone using a cellular telephone on the Jordan Valley Road for example, one is aware that at different intervals one receives a text message informing one that he is now on the Jordanian mobile network, which means charges incurred in the area will be calculated at international rates. This is particularly expensive for IDF reservists in the area, who in the past have received a monthly bill in the thousands of shekels.

In line with the new ministry directive, cellular providers may no longer permit subscribers to roam to the Egyptian or Jordanian systems and in addition, they must see to it that cellular reception to the Israeli networks in those areas is operational.

MK (Ichud HaLeumi) Uri Ariel authored the bill.

  2. Its about time government noticed that they constantly scam people by not giving them service throughout the tiny state of Isreal… next the government should let them know that the random extra charges that appear on my bill every month and I have to call each month to remove them, b/c they know that they are scamming people who just pay w/o reading over the bill… are no longer exceptable!!!!
