Yisrael Beitenu Calling on Barak to Draft Chareidim

Yisrael Beitenu, the party headed by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman continues calling for the drafting of chareidim.

After the Tal Law expired at the end of July 2012, Lieberman turned to Defense Minister Ehud Barak to draft chareidim, who prior to that date were protected by the Tal Law.

Interestingly, the letter sent to Barak by faction members was not signed by Liberman or party MK Anastasia Michaeli.

The letter speaks of the government’s opportunity to correct the historic injustice by drafting chareidim and thereby solving the ‘sharing the burden’ issue.

  1. Do you think Hamas and Neturei Karta are secretly slipping money to Lieberman? Given the unlikely prospects of turning the entire Israeli military into a giant hesder unit (which is what a “frum” army would look like), seriously attempting to conscript Hareidim would seriously destabilize the army, and trigger masive protests by hareidim that would seriously hurts image in the eyes of both the Christians who support Israel for religious reasons (why is the most religious Jews are opposing the state) or many other who support Israel as a refuge for Jews (why are Jews asking for asylum from Israel).

Without exempting yeshiva students from the military, the only ways to avoid a conflict with hareidim would be to find them psychologically unsuited for military service, or to recognize them as conscientious objectors — which would allow them to work in real jobs without serving in the military, which is hardly what the hilonim want.
