Going To His Nephew’s ‘Toeiva’ Wedding Cost Shas MK Yigal Guetta His Knesset Seat

By now most of Israel has figured out why Shas MK Yigal Guetta suddenly decided to submit his resignation from Knesset, which was received by party chairman Aryeh Deri, who thanked him warmly for his service.

It began with Guetta announcing he “Attended a toeiva chasenah and took his entire family”. Many scratched their heads in bewilderment, questioning why he went and if he felt compelled to do so, why tell the world.

That was the criticism aired on Kol Berama Radio by former Shas Minister Shlomo Benizri, who slammed Guetta. In fact, Benizri questioned his wisdom for agreement to speak about the toeiva wedding and his attendance to Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), rubbing salt on the wound.

Once it was on the air and the entire nation was aware of the wedding and the Shas MK’s actions, rabbonim pushed to fire him to spare the criticism against the party. Days later, the letter of resignation was written and accepted.

  1. Could someone explain to me how anyone calming to be frum Jew can go to a Toeiva wedding?
I just don’t understand how anyone could have rationalize that?

  2. Why must YWN present the story? Must the world know it? We turn to YWN for kosher and filtered news. Was someone asleep at the editorial board? Perhaps he or she should resign too. And, presented on the Chofetz Chaim’s yortzeit too!
    Sad and shameful.

  3. It seems this is a bit old news and a compromise is being made that he will just apologize for annoucing on the radio and he will keep his seat.

A formal letter of resignation to the Knesset was not yet written

  4. I think the Knesset badly needs Yigal Guetta. A man who is prepared to place family loyalty before the personal gain and glory of being a Chaver Knesset.
For what is Klal Yisroel if not a very large family? And haven’t we all got “black sheep” to deal with, and to love, whatever their shortcomings?
As we approach the Yomim Noraim when yet another dor which has failed to deliver the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdosh, begs its Heavanly Father for Rachamei DiShemaya, is it not fitting that we should display a little compassion ourselves?

  5. We need to have the benefit of the doubt here. Perhaps he thought he was taking his family on a trip to the zoo or the safari. People make mistakes all the time.
