Shin Bet July Terror Summary


July saw a significant decrease in the number of terrorist attacks: 64, as opposed to 165 in June 2012. The decrease was most prominent in attacks originating in Gaza: 28 attacks in July, as opposed to 99 in June.

A decrease in the number of attacks (compared to June) was also registered in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria area. 30 attacks took place in the Judea and Samaria in July, as opposed to 48 in June; and 6 attacks were executed in Jerusalem, as opposed to 18 during the previous month.

On July 18 a terrorist attack against an Israeli tourist bus was executed at Burgas airport in Bulgaria. 5 Israelis (and the Bulgarian driver) were killed, and over thirty Israelis were injured in this terrorist attack.

Following is a regional distribution of attacks:

28 attacks in Gaza (99 in June); 30 attacks in Judea and Samaria (48 in June); 6 attacks in Jerusalem (18 in June).

Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria area: Most attacks executed in July (34 out of 36) were in the form of firebombs (May: 60 out of 66).

Distribution of attacks according to regions and pattern profile:

Following is a distribution of attacks in June 2012 according to regions:

Gaza– 28 attacks: 13 rocket launchings; 6 mortar shell launchings; 6 small arms shooting; 1 explosive device; 1 AT; 1 AA.

Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem – 36 attacks: 2 explosive device; 34 firebombs (6 in Jerusalem).

High-trajectory launchings from Gaza

Throughout July 2012, 18 rockets and 9 mortar shells were launched towards Israel, (in 19 attacks), compared to 197 rockets and 21 mortar shells, in June (in 94 attacks).
