Shas’ Torah Council Wasn’t Consulted Regarding Guetta’s Future

It has been reported that Shas party MK Yigal Guetta submitted his resignation from Knesset. However, what was taking place in the background was less known. Guetta on Sunday morning submitted his resignation to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and it take effect in 48 hours.

During the 48-hour period, there are senior officials, including party Chairman Aryeh Deri, who returned from Uman to Israel on Sunday, who will be working to prevent ousting him from the party. Deri will not have an easy time as reported, with HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen Shlita adamant in his opposition to permitting Guetta to remain.

It is also reported that Rabbi Cohen is angry with the handling of the entire matter, which did not include asking or informing the Torah Council.

According to a Channel 2 News report on motzei Shabbos, the man who pushed to oust Guetta was Rabbi Yaakov Cohen, son of HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen, with the younger Cohen defying Deri’s position, insisting Guetta must go.

Guetta attacked those who ran the campaign against him and said, “These are a bunch of wicked people who hate us, they are quarrelsome. They want a disagreement with Shas and do not want Shas to rise. We know who the people are.”
