Arrest Warrants Issued for Bnei Yeshivos Who Failed to Report for Draft

idffAccording to a report in the Wednesday edition of HaPeles, hundreds of arrest warrants were issued against bnei yeshivos who failed to report after receiving draft notices.

The letters sent to their homes inform them that due to their failure to report to regional induction centers to complete the draft process, the decision has been made to issue a warrant for their arrest by Israel Police. They are informed that as a result of the impending arrest warrant, they are also barred from leaving the country.

It is explained that the letter they are reading represents a final opportunity to report to an induction center to complete the process, and failure to do so places them in a category of eligibility for immediate draft despite failing to complete the induction process.

  1. They should have followed the instructions of harav Shteinman and harav Kanievsky shlit”a who instructed all bochurs to report to the induction center.

  2. So much for the theory that this isn’t about throwing people in jail and closing down yeshivos. And it appears that draft resistance is broader than the Neturei Karta/Satmar/Eidis Hareidis crowd — and that it is clear this about “breaking” the Torah world, not recruiting more canon foder.

Throwing anyone in prison for refusal will alienate all Hareidim, even those who favor service in the military. It means that instead of an individual serving the the military being seen as motivated by patriotism or a desire for parnassah, he will be seen (and will see himself) as motivated by cowardice for not having the courage to be moser nefesh like those who are being imprisoned.

And we haven’t even begun to hear stories about frum kids struggling to maintain Torah observances either in prison or in the army (assuming they don’t put those who do show up into all Hareidi units, which is not the plan).

Politically it moves Shas and Yahadut ha-Torah permanently away from alliance with the “right” and into a probably alliance with the “left” (if Labor decides this is an issue of conscientious objection rather than “share the burden”), or even with the Arabs.

For the status quo ante to be restored, the most they could have done would have been to limit yeshiva stipends to veterans, and make a serious effort at accomodation of hareidim throughout the military – and probably end conscription and rely on patriotism and economic inducements.

  3. If you really want to show you mean bussiness, you should know your asking g-d to show that he really means business, it doesn’t pay, g-d is stronger to no compariment,
I WILL REMIND YOU WHEN TIME COMES.

  4. Refusing to serve means going to the induction and then not serving. At least go. It’s similar to the US selective service.

  5. #4- Going to the draft office and announcing to their face that you refuse to serve is very direct and insulting and challenging. Bnei Torah have always preferred indirect speech rather than being confrontational. By ignoring the draft notices, you have communicated refusal to the medinah in a quiet way, leaving it to them to decide what to do next. The end result may be the same, but this at least leaves them an option to avoid the confrontation. It also means they will have to go into the yeshiva to make arrests, which they might not want to do

  6. Imagine the outcry when the lapid voters find out that every bachur in prison is costing the taxpayers around 3000 nis per month!
