HaRav Gershon Edelstein Shlita on Hikes During Bein Hazmanim

ponPonevezh Rosh Yeshiva HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein Shlita has in recent talks to talmidim instructed them to continue limudim during Chodosh Nissan, not to take a break during Bein Hazmanim. Rabbonim often call on talmidim to use the time to strengthen themselves, referring to the Bein Hazmanim, יומא דפגרא. The rosh yeshiva warned of the dangers of hikes during bein hazmanim, even hikes that come after a talmid has learned a number of hours earlier in the day.

The rav spoke of the seriousness of bitul zman, adding particularly today, in Eretz Yisrael, with the harsh gezeira facing the tzibur at large and the need to increase limud Torah and adherence and performance of mitzvos.

The rav spoke of the need to do chessed, and this includes helping in one’s home in Pesach preparations, but warns against bitul zman during the break from the regular seder limud.

  1. Where were these statements during the Lebanon war, Cast IRON or during rockets upon Southern Israel?

It incites most residents who are on their way to miluim (reserve duty), basic training, National Service responsibilites to see/watch bunches of Bnei Torah doing hikes, tiyulim, water parks, etc. pre/post Pesach and during the summer.

  2. The Rosh Yeshiva warned of the dangers of hikes? What dangers? Is it REALLY such a terrible thing if a Yeshiva Bochur relaxes for a little bit?

  3. Zion Flag – What a bunch of nonsense. Your comment has nothing to do with Rav Edelstein’s point. Furthermore your comment is blatantly false. Every time there is an IDF campaign during Bein Hazmanim there are calls for, and instruction given by, Torah Leaders to continue Torah study during Bein Hazmanim. Unfortunately I think that you meant to say “It incites most residents who are on their way to miluim (reserve duty), basic training, National Service responsibilities to see/watch bunches of Bnei Torah” period.

  4. Barlev – the second Lebanon war was most certainly during vacation time. It was during the summer of 2006.

  5. #3 – The Rosh Yeshiva was referring to various tragedies that occurred over the last several years when boys went on tiyulim – drownings, etc.
#1 – if I remember correctly, there were times that “bein hazmanin” was “cancelled” when there was a warlike situation during bein hazmanim.

  6. Here’s an idea…… why not ALL Jews take learning and teffilah with sincerity and seriousness all the time, whether its vacation week or not! Sure, one can “relax” and go with the family to the zoo, but should bachurim skip davening with a minyan, or learning after davening and at night after maariv? I think not!

  7. What protection is there for the medina during normal years when bein hazmanim is not cancelled? Oh, wait. Maybe the IDF might just come in handy at times like that?

  8. R’ Shlomo Wolbe was sitting in a miklat in Be’er Yaakov at the beginning of the six day war and the Jordanian shells were landing close by. Amidst the commotion and shutter caused by the near hits, those sitting near R’ Wolbe heard him calmly saying to himself that he is willingly mekabel upon himself missah [to die] if through this would affect the bitul of the Chillul Hashem which is Tzionism
