Report: Shas Denies Deal for Chief Rabbinate Elections

rabbi_amar_2.jpgIn response to published reports of a deal with Shas regarding the upcoming elections for chief rabbis, Shas officials deny that such a deal was made.

The reported deal stated that Shas would support the Bayit Yehudi dati leumi candidate for the Ashkenazi chief rabbi and in return, the dati leumi party will support the passage of the so-called Amar Bill and Rishon L’tzion HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shlomo Amar’s bid for a second term.

Kikar Shabbat quotes “a senior Shas official” anonymously, stating “There is no such deal. Rav Ovadia would never approve of Rabbi Stav for the post of Ashkenazi chief rabbi”. The report adds that Yahadut Hatorah MKs were also angered amid reports of the Shas deal, which is now being categorized as a baseless rumor.

  1. “The report adds that Yahadut Hatorah MKs were also angered amid reports of the Shas deal, which is now being categorized as a baseless rumor.”

    Why?
The Ashkenazi rabinate of israel is affiliated with UTJ?

  2. UTJ has never accepted the fact that SHAS plays with its own set of cards and that they are more connected to ‘amcha yisroel’.

  3. I don’t think Shas will support Rav Stav for Chief Rabbi, it’s not clear that BAyit Hayehudi will support him either. What is clear is that if the חרדים would like to nominate a candidate for Chief Rabbi, he better be well qualified and well respected if they would like to see him win.
