Diplomatic Incident Between Israel & Egypt: Egypt Demands an Apology


morsiEgyptian diplomatic officials in Cairo have summed Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Yaakov Amitai to express Cairo’s displeasure over an incident in which three Egyptian diplomatic officials assigned to the embassy in Tel Aviv were ousted from an event in an eastern Jerusalem church on motzei Shabbos. Police on the scene ignored their diplomatic status and forced them to leave despite protests. It is reported that police also ignored Foreign Ministry involvement, seeking to avoid the diplomatic incident, but to no avail.

When asked to comment, police officials say they are unaware of such an incident.

Government officials released statement that police on the scene acted inappropriately towards officials presenting diplomatic credentials. Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin has issued an apology but back in Cairo, officials are demanding a written apology.
