Degel Angered Over Shas’ Support of Bayit Yehudi Deal

gafnDegel Hatorah officials’ are angered by the deal signed before Shavuos between the Shas and Bayit Yehudi parties surrounding the upcoming election for the nation’s new chief rabbis.

For Degel leaders, they feel a sense of betrayal by Shas for not standing firmly with the Ashkenazi chareidi parties, but opting to move ahead with a deal, davka with Bayit Yehudi, the party that aligned with Yesh Atid, leading to a government coalition that excludes all chareidi representation, Ashkenazi and Sephardi alike.

It is entirely possible that Degel will strike back by voting for two entirely different candidates in the election for chief rabbis.

  1. There are times to make deals upfront or behind the back and there are times to boycott and ignore the “other”. To smack yourself in the face just to keep a façade is ridiculous. If these 2 parties can unite to reach a consensus of two quality Rabbanim….go for it or else the consequences will hurt all parties (BY, UTJ, SHAS and secular groups).
