Rav Stav: I’m Torn by the Atmosphere Surrounding the Elections for Chief Rabbinate

stavAfter the unprecedented scathing verbal assault against Rabbi David Stav by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, and the response by Tzohar Rabbonim, Rabbi David Stav, a candidate to become the next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel explains that he is pained and distraught by the atmosphere which surrounds the election of new chief rabbis. “I would personally like to say thank you for the thousands of emails, SMS text messages and telephone calls that I received from rabbonim, public officials and many of you. You strengthen me and my family in light of the personal attacks against me” the rav posted on his Facebook page.

“I don’t take your embrace for granted and I thank each and every one of your from the bottom of my heart.”

“I am torn by the atmosphere that surrounds the election for the Chief Rabbinate but when I made the decision to embark on this path I did not place my own issues before me, but a mission, a derech of Torah in line with Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook ZT”L for the Chief Rabbinate.”

The rav concludes, “These are difficult times for me and my family so I thank you for the strength and support. I will continue doing my utmost to connect the Jewish People and its heritage and teachings, and to bring together the religious, secular, chareidi, Ashkenazi, Sephardi and the entire Beis Yisrael.”

  1. “…the rav’s facebook page….” is one of the funniest statements I’ve EVER read ANYWHERE. And that includes the RCA invoking The Satmar Rov last week.

  2. “Rav Kook spoke of the fact that if Rav Kook ZT”L could ever imagine a day when the Rabbanut could reach a level, a level that some get up and announce one does not need kabolas mitzvos to convert to Judaism, adding such a person denies Har Sinai…” These comments were made in reference to the candidacy of Rabbi David Stav, albeit without mentioning the rav by name.”

  3. I may be wrong but does it seem strange to anyone that the candidate for the position of Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel has a Facebook page?

  4. #1, #2, #5 – Those who turn to harav Stav are either D”L or chiloni (he is very active in Tzohar). Both those communities use internet and Facebook.

The impetus for his candidacy stems from the fact that he works with all walks of Am Yisrael, not just the yeshivesh velt.

  5. Rav Stav has the endorsement of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein. i think you can be often valued by those who fear you.

I believe most gedolim in the 19th century did not have phone numbers. today shealot can be dynamicaaly asked. ashrai ayin. one can tweet the availability of a shiur. bless the users of technology to communicate broadly and cogently spreading the word of God.

Does Mr .Stav pander to clientele who defend Basic Judaism or
    are anti?
What does that say about him?
What does it say about yourself?

  7. Dear Yagel Libi
It makes no difference were you are a Rov. A Rov is a person that influences others. What kind of influence are you giving when you use FACE BOOK. I don’t even know how face book works and I’m far from the title Rov.

  8. What a bunch of blowhards these commentors are. You wouldn’t hold by the chief rabbinate if it whacked you over the head, for kashrus, or giyur, or anything else. So why do you think the position should be beholden to you or to a chareidi agenda??

  9. having a facebook page is the same thing as being a columnist for a Torah newspaper. No big deal??!!!

It’s a way to connect with interested personel, questions and answers can be addressed and New ideas written up. Many organizations have a web site or email inquiry site eg. yated, hamodia, agudah, national council of YI, etc.

  10. Does anyone know what movies the rav suggests there are some top flicks out there i would just wanna garner his hadracha to know which one to attend

al tosir min hadvor asher yagidu lecha…
