Responding to a High Court of Justice petition challenging his candidacy in the Chief Rabbinate race, Tzfas Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu responded to the court via his attorney, Aviad Cohen. The petition was filed by Meretz Party MK Esawi Frij.
The rav maintains that the effort to disqualify his candidacy is strictly political and doing so would be a blow to Israeli democracy. The rabbi believes that the 150 member voting body will decide if he is worthy to serve as Israel’ next Rishon L’Tzion and not the Supreme Court.
Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein announced that he feels the rav is not a suitable candidate and as such, if his election as Chief Rabbi is challenged in the High Court of Justice, he as attorney general cannot defend him.

#2 You’re so right. Israel has all signs of communism, a far cry from democracy. Even the 150 member voting body was carefully selected to ensure that “one of theirs” will be elected. Rabbi Eliyahu therefore doesn’t have much chance of winning, although he seems the best candidate.
