Porush & Gafne Oppose Lapid’s Draft Plan

lapMK (Yahadut Hatorah) Meir Porush in his capacity as a member of the Shaked Ministerial Committee finalizing the chareidi draft law opposes a new paragraph being inserted into the bill. Some committee members wish to insert a stipulation that by 2020 all draft eligible chareidim will be inducted into military service regardless of age or yeshiva status. This new clause means in six years all chareidim will be inducted like the general population.

Porush made his party’s position clear – that if this clause is not removed Yahadut Hatorah will pull out of the committee and cooperation with the chareidim will come to an abrupt end.

Colleague MK Moshe Gafne announced that if the clause is included in the final version, he will instruct all chareidim, including those who are not learning, to stop any and all cooperation with the IDF.

Committee Chairwoman (Bayit Yehudi) Ayelet Shaked indicates the controversial clause will not be a part of the bill’s final draft.

  1. “This new clause means in six years all chareidim will be inducted like the general population.”

    In 6 years
    1) Lapid/Piron/Bennett will be in the dustbin of history
    2) the general population will dodge the draft
    3) the general population will be charedi

Moshiach will be here long before that.

  2. The Chofetz Chaim actually wrote a book called Machane Yisroel that dealt with halachic issues for Jews that had to serve in the Polish Army. If they didn’t serve, they would be probably jailed or killed. The Chofetz Chaim understood the reality.

  3. Meir Porush in his capacity ……opposes a new paragraph being inserted into the bill…..

What about the rest of the bill ? Is he fine with that ?

  4. #7 lately both MK Porush & Gafne said that their responsibility is to preserve those who are learning Torah full-time, all others should enlist.

  5. Perhaps the article should actually report the full facts, hmm?

This modification to the proposed law did NOT come from Lapid or Yesh Atid – it was added in by Yehuda Weinstein, the Attorney General of Israel, who felt that the law might otherwise be struck down by the Israeli Supreme court as “discriminatory”, since only Chareidim would be allowed to defer service. By having a so-called “sunset” provision that would eventually eliminate the special treatment, Weinstein believes the law has a better chance of being upheld.

It should be noted that ALL parties working on the bill, including Yesh Atid and Bayit Yehudi, opposed this modification. Therefore, calling this particular paragraph “Lapid’s draft plan”, as this article does, is simply false.
