LISTEN TO IT: Governor Cuomo Holds Phone Conference With Jewish Leaders

PHOTO: Office of Governor Andrew Cuomo)

NY Governor Cuomo held a phone conference meeting with Jewish leaders Sunday night, to discuss the ongoing lockdown on “Red Zones” in NYC which include predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods. Sunday night.

Among those who asked questions included Rabbi Moshe David Niederman of UJO Satmar Williamsburg, HaRav Yaakov Bender of Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, Mr Izzy Spitzer, the Mayor of New Square and others.

The leaders made it clear and stressed that those who are using vile language about the Governor have been condemned, and represent no one.

Listen to the clips below:

RABBI NIEDERMAN OF SATMAR (UJO) WILLIAMASBURG:

“I’d like to mention to the governor, you mentioned two issues. One issue is the terms that have been used against the governor. I think it’s very clear that it had no representation who did that. The protests were condemned. The Central Rabbinical Congress and so did so many responsible leadership Rabbis coming our and condemned these type of behavior. On the final issue…”

GOVERNOR CUOMO RESPONDING:

“Look, it would be my pleasure to sit down with a small group and work on it. But listen, the one caveat, I can’t change the law for one particular area. The law is the law all across the state, the same law. Now, in these these zones, where we get the numbers down, we can change the zone, because our hospitalization data is so specific, it goes block by block. We make progress, I can change the zone. I can’t change the law of the state. The law on gatherings has been at 50% for months. So, I can’t change the law, but I can work with you on how to get the numbers down, and if we’re making progress in an area…Y’know, I don’t want to close anything, right? I want to open everything as fast as we can…”

RABBI YAAKOV BENDER ROSH YESHIVA OF DARCHEI TORAH:

GOIVERNOR CUOMO RESPONDING:

MR IZZY SPITZER, MAYOR OF NEW SQUARE:

  1. These Rabbis do NOT get it. They don’t understand what it means that they Democrats are GONE LEFT. They don’t understand that the GOV is USING THEM! AND MOCKING THEM! AND is SMUG SHURE HE WILL be a GREAT COMMUNIST DICTATOTR AFTER BIDEN WINS THE ELECTION!
HE will call the narrative. HE will be King. When HE wants, those Jews will kneel. Or face the Ghetto! He has those Jews where he wants them.
Hashem shall plant brains and courage to our leaders to stop kissing the Gestapo!
No! This is NOT an overreaction! I know the game! Have been there!

  2. According to Yochonon Donn, the call was limited to those who agreed to have it muted, with three people allowed to ask softball preapproved questions. It was for this reason nobody from the Boro Park yeshivas, for whom Cuomo originally intended the call, participated

  3. How does it help matters when our “leadership” can’t speak clearly, concisely, and to the point. It’s so frustrating when a simple 30 second point, which in and of itself is accurate, legitimate, and important, takes five minutes of fumpfing and repeating and stuttering without ever even getting to the actual point. No, it’s not a matter of English (which is an issue of it’s own), but of being prepared, rehearsed, and at least trying to sound intelligent. Can’t even imagine what Cuomo thinks but it does us absolutely no good sounding like unprepared illiterates.

  4. Seems to me that Mr. Rechnitz has made headway VERY quickly. Doesn’t seem coincidental that Hisachdus put out a letter the very next next day (or the following?) after Mr. Rechnitz put out his letter? So to all those bright ones telling Rechnitz to first move to Boro Park…..- seems to me, he can make great progress alot quicker from LA 🙂

  5. These discussions are a Kiddush Hashem. Responsible people on both sides showing each other respect and listening to each other and getting on the same page. This is how it should be.

  6. FORGET GOVERNER CUOMO IF YESHIVA MIR CAN RAISE 50 MILLION FOR THEIR ANNUAL DINNER WHY CANT WE UNITE AND GET A 50 MILLION DOLLAR FUND TO PAY ALL FINES AND TELL THE GOVERNER JUMP IN A LAKE ANY CONSEQUENCES OF POTENTIAL FUTURE FUNDING WELL FIGHT IN COURT ON A LATER DATE WHEN THE GOVERNER IS OUT OF OFFICE WITH PART OF THE 50 MILLION FUND ALLOCATED FOR THE FIGHT TO GET BACK OUR FUNDING IF IT GETS TAKEN AWAY! ENOUGH WITH THIS CLOWN HE IS JUST TRYING TO SHOW THE WORLD LOOK WHAT A GREAT JOB i AM DOING KEEPING THIS CITY SAFE WITH PROPER PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID A SECOND WAVE HE EVEN CAME OUT WITH A BOOK IN MIDST OF ALL THIS CRISIS! ARE YOU KIDDING YOUR REALLY GOING TO TRY AND PLEAD WITH A MEGALOMANIAC WHO IS ENJOYING HIS POWER HE HAS ON PEOPLE THE GUY IS A SICKO

  7. Thank you Rabbi Bender for showing us hadracha and pleading on our behalf. May Hashem turn the governor’s heart towards His will. (By the way, for those who don’t know the Benders have a stutter and a sort of lisp. Moshe Rabbenu also had a speech impediment.)

  8. YOU’RE A LIAR GOVERNOR. It is in your hands. you can say tomorrow schools are open and schools will be open. Rabbi Bender begs the governor to open the schools. The governor responds “the law” “He can’t change the law.” Really now? where does it say in the law you have to close all the schools in a red zone?? You didn’t say that in the last two weeks. If in fact there was such a law don’t you think it needs amending As rabbi Bender said the children are being adversely affected. In the lockdown in March – june parents were also home. Who is supervising the children now? Rabbi Bender didn’t say it but if there is no school then the children are playing at home with their friends so how is it helping by shutting the schools? Rabbi Bender was trying to placate the governor. I understand. But in these situations a person like Tichler emerges to fill the void.

  9. With Respect to Rav Bender,
Anything involving Kornbluh is aino tehora and should be shunned.
And Cuomo cannot be trusted under any circumstances.
Unfortunately the other rabbis mentioned are just puppets of their respective Chassidus and should be given no credence.

  10. Another sell out by a shrewd Governor who knows how to play up to the Askonim
Niederman and Spitzer care about one thing only ………………………………….. that is dollars and grants not the safety of our community

  11. You really can’t believe a word the governor says. He supposedly was working with all the Jewish leaders when he blindsided them and closed down Darchei Torah. There was a letter from the Aguda that was “leaked” where they protested strongly how the governor says he is working with Jews and then does the opposite. The Jewish community didn’t vote for him and he didn’t forget or forgive it.

  12. Genuk Shoin: Having a fund like that would be even a bigger Chilul Hashem than has been made so far. The Gentiles would then claim that rich Jews were using their money to allow other Jews to break the law. Don’t you see? It would be like a criminal slush fund.

And don’t you think the state would turn to other kinds of punishments if it recognized that the fines weren’t working? How about padlocking the shuls and yeshivas? How about cutting electricity and water?

I still don’t understand why people would rather fight and cause a huge Chilul Hashem than follow a few simple rules. Wearing a mask is not a big deal. Everyone, Gentiles too, must wear one. And COVID is a killer – 220,000 dead. Many Rabbonim have died of it. Why continue to fight? I just don’t understand.

  13. a few points
    1. sholom bayis is not settled with head on collissions. so yes there is a delicate balance getting every one back to the table.
    2. the 3 names in the article are major connected , accomplished askonim letovas haklal despite their english they have a rolodex of contacts you wouldnt believe.
    3. DATA- we said all along the gov data is way off and he agreed to reelvauate the data and act accordingly that was the initial goal –
    4. now the big question is whats the criteria for closing a school of 2500 kids like darchei who did everything right , there is no incentive to follow the law .. bariers..temps.. if you get closed anyway.

  14. You’re absolutely right! Incomprehensible rabbonim pandering to an anti semite! It’s disgusting! Not one of them called him out on his comments about jews!

  15. Where does this Mr. Donn get his info from? Did he hear the audio? Did not sound like these rabbanim were asking any questions. From the audio it sounds like the rabbanim were Condemning the protests and giving much praise to Cuomo. Then, they were explaining their point how important it is for the yeshivas to be open. In response to these rabbanim cuomo said he understands and will have a meeting today to discuss further action and work together to get the schools open ASAP.

  16. Vadim makes a good point. The audio of the Niederman statement seems to ramble on without a clear and cogent message being communicated. Not everyone is good at public speaking but in this case, this was especially muddled. There are some excellent askanim who could have made the same points in less than half the time and they would have been much more to the point and understandable.

  17. It’s not about the masks anymore, (btw, plenty of goyim don’t wear masks) it’s about the governor inciting anti semitism by singling out orthodox jews, with comments like “it’s an orthodox jewish problem” “they never follow the rules” telling the church that it’s not their fault they got shuttered only because they happen to be in a jewish neighborhood…these are dangerous comments that are sowing more hatred against jews, already there are attacks on Hidden, people being yelled at…if you and the rabbonim don’t see this as the biggest problem right now then you are as blind as the jews were in 1930s Germany

  18. Thank God for our logical, polite and diplomatic rabbis and leaders who can speak to each other with respect and accomplish real things!
If someone spoke to me the way tishler rants about our poiticians i probably wouldnt respond so friendly, but when people treat me with dignity and respect then i respond that way and can be much more productive. we all make listakes, sometimes big ones, but mishlei says to give tochacha softly! putting people on the defense gets us no where. we must work with each other even when its hard. we all make mistakes!
cuomo is the governor and we are required by the Torah to be respectful to our leaders.
and truth is him and his father have a friendly history with the yidden. cuomo’s father gave satmar the go ahead to even build kiryas joel (and no im not chasidish, im litvish)

  19. and an added thought, its really sad to see the negative comments on this feed, we should be expressing hakaras hatov for the rabbonim/askonim involved here and tp the governor for agreeing to work with our community, isnt that what the ‘ protests’ were trying to accomplish, or maybe it really was just an angry group of people displaying bad middos without any real plan. anger is the easy route – that is the clearest sign its the wrong route, to get on the phone and be friendly and work out a practical plan – thats a lot harder.
shkoyach to all the people on this call!
(as lipa shmeltzer said – po po po po POSITIVITY is what i love!!)

  20. If I had to bet the farm, I would side with Rav Bender over any one of the anonymous yokels who bash him online. He has more seichel in his little pinky then all of these anonymous yokels.

  21. Tischler accomplished two very important things. One the wife of the mayor dropped out of the race for borough president. When she saw the fiery protests in Boro park she panicked. She realized Brooklyn is home to a half million Jews and that is stacked against her winning in Brooklyn. Second many democratic politicians are nervous that Orthodox Jews have built up resentment to the democrats and are going big time with Trump. This is influencing our of town orthodox democratic Jews and out of town non Jewish Trumpist now look up to Brooklyn Orthodox Jews. You can see it on n facebook among white America. They have gained a new respect for the people of the Bible is what one non Jew told me. Thank you Reb Tischler.

  22. Coronavirus cases in Westchester are now their highest since June, over 1000 active cases, 50 people now hospitalized, six deaths last week (see the article just up on Lohud). Not a word from Cuomo. No red zones, no lockdown, no fines being issued, nothing.

  23. 1. The governor should realize the difference between “executive orders” and “laws”. It’s civics 101.

Executive orders are written by the governor office and signed by the governor, and can be changed and recinded at will. Executive orders don’t go through any process, and is completely up to the executive branch to design without any outside public input. The governor has been signing executive orders at a whim

Laws are passed by the people legislature, and the cannot be changed. Laws get public input before they are passed and are generally debated to a degree. The legislature has basically been in recess for the past 8 months, all while still collecting a fat check.

Almost all the covid regulation have been enacted by executive order. Including the new micro cluster zones. Which by the way, the governor has stated earlier in the summer, is a bad idea because you can’t limit the virus to a small area. That’s nyc could open in June, because every neighbor had to be cleared.

    2. The the redzone is in southern brooklyn, so why are people from williamsburg which is in northern brooklyn speaking???

3 the metrics keep on changing. First is percentage, then case, and now hospitalization. He’s just playing games. Hospitalization do not reflect active spread, as unfortunately people stay in hospitals for a while. And, covid hospitalization generally take place about 2 weeks after getting infected, so it’s by nature old data.

  24. Your friend, my, my we have have to thank these “leaders” for begging from King Coumo to act fairly with us…And we have be be thankful thank King Coumo is “agreeing to work with our community” …Really now?! He is being a racist anti-Semite and we have to be greatful to him?! There’s nothing wrong with being angry and displaying our anger for being singled out and discriminated against. Did you see the latest liberal protest being shut down in Manhattan for lack of social distancing? No? I didn’t either. And that is just one example of him targeting our community with different laws regualtions than everyone else. First it was the zones and the zones weren’t adequate enough to shut down Jewish moisdos, lists were used, just like the Nazis. He’s targeting our communities when there are non-Jewish neighborhoods with much higher positive case rates! And we are displaying bad middos for not wanting to be targeted….I’m sure you would apologize to the Nazis too for not running onto the trains fast enough…

  25. What laws is Cuomo referring to? The ones he himself made up?
And these laws pertain to Jews only?
And we have to say Thank You?
