EXCLUSIVE: ADL Sends Letter To Editor Of The NY Post Over Anti-Hasidic Coverage

The following is a letter that was sent to the editor of the New York Post by the NY regional director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), protesting the Post’s description of slain Menachem Stark as a “Hasidic Slumlord.”

The letter was exclusively obtained by YWN Sunday evening.

To the Editor:

While there has been much focus on the Post’s insensitive headline, “Who Didn’t Want Him Dead?” surrounding the murder of Menachem Stark, we are equally troubled by the opening of the Jan. 5 article, “The millionaire Hasidic slumlord.”

There was time enough in the piece to describe Stark’s background, but to lead with this reference to his being “Hasidic” is offensive and unnecessary. Just substitute any other minority for “Hasidic” in such an opening description and it would be understood how provocative it is, particularly associated with the descriptor “millionaire slumlord.”

Sincerely,

Evan Bernstein

New York Regional Director

Anti-Defamation League

At a press conference Sunday afternoon at Borough Hall, councilman Chaim Deutsch called on the ADL to address the latest coverage of the NY Post over the murder of Menachem Stark, widely seen as an assault on the entire Orthodox Jewish Community in Brooklyn
