Gold Smugglers Nabbed at Allenby Bridge Crossing

3Customs and security officials manning the Allenby Crossing between Israel and Jordan apprehended gold smugglers. The gold was placed in the shoes of one of the smugglers as insoles.

The residents of PA (Palestinian Authority) occupied areas of Hebron were entering Israel from Jordan last week. An x-ray check revealed 1kg (2.2 lbs) gold inserts in the shoes of one of the three. The two other suspects had two plates in a bag each, bringing the total of confiscated gold to six plates weighing a total of 3.7kg and valued at 520,000. They should have declared the gold and paid 77,000 NIS in taxes but told agents they have nothing to declare.

According to Allenby Crossing Customs Chief Ofir Silverman, in 2013 they recovered an unprecedented amount of undeclared gold, 113kg (248.5 lbs) in different forms valued at 18 million NIS and a customs value of 3.7 million NIS in taxes.

  1. I can understand him. Even if I lived in Boro Park or Jerusalem among frum Yidden, I would not want people to know I have a kilo of gold; for certain if I was an Arab living amongst the biggest ganavim in the world in Hebron, I would not want any of my neighbors to know I had gold in my possession.
