Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and the City Council’s Rules Committee Chairman Brad Lander announced the appointments of Borough Park councilman David Greenfield as the chairman of the coveted Land Use Committee and Flatbush freshman Chaim Deutsch as chairperson of the Education sub-committee on non-public schools.

Council member Greenfield’s appointment to the second highest ranking committee also comes with a bonus of an additional $15K yearly paycheck. Deutsch got an additional $8,000 – known as a ‘lulu.’

Greenfield was also assigned as member of the Governmental Operations, Technology, Transportation, and Youth Services committees. Deutsch was assigned as a member of Aging, Contracts, Education, Oversight & Investigations, Public Safety and Waterfronts.

Brooklyn Councilman Mark Treyger will chair the Sandy Recovery and Resiliency Committee.

In a joint statement, Speaker Mark-Viverito and Rules Committee Chairman Lander said: “The leadership and committee chairs appointed today show that this City Council will be reflective of New York’s diversity and values. These committees will be critical to examining and debating legislation, engaging the public and holding the administration accountable. Our commitment is to empower committees and members to make sure all voices are heard within the council and today is the start of that commitment.”

  1. Your phrasing, Mr. Kornbluh, is very interesting. When Mr. Greenfield gets 15,000 dollars to be a chairman, you call it a “bonus”. When Mr. Deutsch gets 8,000 dollars for the same kind of job, you call it a “lulu”.
What are you implying or are you showing your bias again?
