Minister Bennett: IDF Service is Not a Gezeira, but a Mitzvah

benWhile there is a machlokes among poskim and rabbonim in the dati leumi community regarding participation in the Million Man Atzeres, there is no question in the mind of Bayit Yehudi Party leader Minister Naftali Bennett.

Bennett was clear in his message against the atzeres, stating allegations that the government seeks to act against yeshivos are untrue and accusation that the criminal sanctions are directed at lomdei Torah are unfounded. “Not a single person learning Torah will be sent to prison” he exclaimed.

“After the Holocaust the Torah world was facing extinction. Six million Jews were murdered and with them vast Torah knowledge that was accumulated throughout the generations was lost. Ben-Gurion wisely called on a small group to preserve the spark of Torah, those who declare Torah their profession” and today, the situation is excellent. Never in the history of Israel was there such a large group of lomdei Torah as in the State of Israel today”.

“But now we are faced with a unique program: a large chareidi tzibur that does not share in the military service and economy. There is no historical precedent for not participating in the workplace: Rabbi Yochanan the shoemaker, and the Rambam, a physician. Rashi was a winemaker. Throughout Jewish history gedolei yisrael worked. The service in the IDF is not a gezeira, but a mitzvah and a great privilege.”

Bennett added “With 30% of the first graders being chareidi the nation will not survive in the chareidim are not integrated into the service and workplace. The Shaked Law will in the coming four years permit young chareidim to enter the workforce and integrate gradually into the IDF and national service. This is the first time the State of Israel recognizes limud Torah as a major national value”.

Bennett lashed out at both Yair Lapid and the chareidim, blaming them for unnecessary noise as the law was being legislated, referring to the distribution of wet wipes by Yesh Atid inciting against chareidim and harsh pashkavilim by chareidim on the other side.

  1. The fool and the jester in the court of the King.
There is no mitzvah to be a solider in the IDF. And to clarify a point if the issue that Mr Bennet has is the lack of participation in the work force by the Chareidi community to which he is severally underestimating. All that need be done is stop the requirement to join the army. It is a very simple and fundamental line.
WE THE CHAREIDI PEOPLE < FOLLOWERS OF HKBH AND HIS TORAH WILL NOT EVER EVER EVER ALLOW FOR THE INDUCTION OF OUR CHILDREN INTO ANY ARMY OTHER THAN THE ARMY OF G-D.

  2. So will his party vote against its own proposal? Eliminate penal sanctions and there is no crisis. There also is no coalition.

If wants higher hareidi participation in the Israeli “official” (as opposed to “grey”) economy, he should be advocating laws to reduce discrimination against hareidim (in the past he opposed such laws), and to mandate reasonable accomodation of religious practices (as opposed to current policy of sort of requiring the modern Orthodox level of observance, and penalizing anyone who strictly follows halacha).

They goyim have a phrase to the effect that if you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Bennett, Bayit Yehudi, and most of the Dati Leumi movments are part of the problem.

  6. Benette contradicts himself, how many children does he have, and same to all his friends, how many infants do they destroy before their even born, the fact that the chareidim are 10% of the nation but account for 30% of grade one children shows the truth and they are building a country with an army, they are simply embarrassed of the true facts and just want to destroy the facts by breaking the upcoming power of the chareidim so they look better.

  7. You know, I always learned “Deracheha Darkei Noam, V’chol Nesivoseha Shalom”, and “Talmidei Chachamim hevei Marbim Shalom baOlam”. The nastiness I see emanating from teh Chareidi newspapers – and many of the commentators above – sure don’t seem to meet those criteria. Makes me question if Torah is truly the motivator of those spouting such vile drivel, and whether the papers are quoting actual Gedolim or just making it up as they go along. Somehow, I can’t see Rav Shteinman, Shlita, referring to Rav Druckman as “Druckman”…
