RARE P’SAK: HaRav Bergman To Speak At Adirei Event During Shiva For His Son

HaGaon HaRav Meir Tzvi Bergman, who received the bitter news of his son’s petirah after traveling to the US for the first time in four years, will speak at the Adirei HaTorah event during the week of shiva.

HaRav Bergman’s speech was initially canceled due to dinei aveilus. However, he remained in the US to sit shiva since his doctors felt it would be too taxing for the elderly Rosh Yeshivah to make another long plane trip so soon after landing.

Meanwhile, the Roshei Yeshivos of Lakewood began discussing the issue of whether HaRav Bergman’s appearance at the event would fall under the halachic category of “רבים צריכים לו” – believing that the success of the event may be impinged by the Rosh Yeshivah’s absence.

What exactly is your question? Two eminent poskim say he allowed to go, evidently its עת לעשות. (Although I’m not exactly sure what you mean by עת לעשות?) This isn’t a wedding, but I have been to a number of weddings where the parents or grandparents were in middle of shiva and they attended the wedding.

  2. I think the mother of the Stoliner and Loitzker Rebbes was niftar a few days before the Loitzker Rebbe married off a child and the two brothers were during the week of Shiva. Poskim from America and Poskim from Israel penned responsa that he may partake in his child’s wedding albeit with some caveats.

  3. Yaapchik I was at a wedding where Harav Dovid Feinstein and Harav Elimelech Bluth were officiating. The choson’s grandfather was in shiva As per Psak of Rav Dovid the grandfather attended the wedding. After the Kabolas Ponim Rav Bluth told him he can stay for the entire wedding. Unfortunately this is not so unusual.
