MK (Yahadut Hatorah) Rabbi Yaakov Litzman sent an urgent letter to Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, in which he calls for the immediate release of bochur yeshiva Yaakov Yisrael Paz, who was arrested on Purim after police learned he was listed as a draft dodger. He was handed over to IDF police and brought before an on-call judge, who sent him to military jail for ten days.
In his letter to the senior minister, Litzman points out that “after the new draft law which I oppose adamantly was passed, the talmid and all others like him are no longer in a category of failing to report for they must all receive draft notices anew under the new law”. Litzman points out the passing of the new draft bill into law has resulted in a new legal reality which removes Paz and others from the category of unauthorized absence from the IDF.
As such, he is seeking the bochur’s immediate release from IDF Prison 6 since he is not in violation of the nation’s current draft law.

An opportunity for Yaalon to make a low risk conciliatory gesture. Given that the boy was involved in a paperwork error, but was refusing to do the paperwork for political reasons, he’s a political prisoner, and it isn’t good to be arrestig people for opposing the regime, at least if you want support in the western world.
Nonsense. Just focus on the real issues.
