In Norway, Differing Views on How to Ban Bris Milah

bris3Although the idea of banning Bris Milah has gained traction in Norway, there is some dispute over how exactly to limit the practice. While Norway’s nurse’s union has pressured the government to ban the practice of circumcising young children completely, YWN has learned that Norway’s health minister have been calling to simply require circumcisions to be done within hospitals.

The Nurse’s Union’s proposal would reportedly ban parents authorizing circumcisions on their children until their teenage years when the children could decide for themselves. While Health Minister Bent Høie proposal to limit circumcisions to hospitals seems less drastic than the Nurses’ Union, it would still interfere with the way Jews have traditionally performed Bris Milah for thousands of years.
