NYC: Bill Aims to Lessen Ticket Window on Street Sweeping Days

npaAlternate side parking could be less of a problem for drivers if a new bill gets through City Hall.

Current laws ban parking for a period of time to clear the way for street cleaners.

But Manhattan City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez has re-introduced legislation that would allow cars to legally park again once the street sweeper passes by, rather than wait for the end of the normal window.

Many drivers who spoke with NY1 like the idea.

“Let them pass the rule, that would be great. If we could get to leave the car a little bit earlier, that’s great, because people need it. Sometimes you come here and you can’t park on this side of the street. It’s 8:30 and you gotta get your kids in, but you can’t park,” said one driver.

“That sounds it would be helpful. I didn’t hear anything about it, but I would support it,” said another driver.

Rodriguez previously introduced the bill in 2010, where it won the support of current City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

But the Sanitation Department reportedly is concerned that parking enforcement officers would not be able to tell whether or not a street sweeper has passed by when issuing tickets.

  1. Sorry, would not work good. For those who deal with this twice a week, know that people sit in their car for at least 15 min before alt side ends so they get a spot. If this would happen, people would sit in their car the whole time until a truck passes by. The truck would have to go around them, and many blocks would end up not getting cleaned at all.

Also, it would be a big problem for those driving down the street. People double parked on one side, while the other-side is fill with cars already since they saw the truck pass by.

The fact that we have set times to move your car back across the street, make it much smoother.

They should rather make it an official rule that you are allowed to doublepark, instead of it being an unwritten one, and if you get a ticket you have to pay it.
