Israel: The Government is Not Allocating Funds for Family Food Security

povDespite many promises from state officials to assist the growing number of families complaining of food insecurity, funding has not been forthcoming.

Back in 2007 the Latet organization turned to the Supreme Court in an effort to compel the state to provide minimum sustenance to families in need. This led to the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee headed by the Director-General of the Welfare Ministry Nachum Itzkowitz. After a year of work the committee officially recognized the severity of the problem of food insecurity and committed to assist families to provide basic nourishment to all in need. The committee also recognized the need to increase the annual budget from 30 to 50 million shekels, but the treasury only approved this in November 2009. On January 1 of this year, the government allocated 200 million shekels.

However, to date, not a single shekel has been given to assist poor families in obtaining minimal monthly nourishment. Weintraub calls the government’s actions “irresponsible” and he blames the dire situation on bureaucratic foot-dragging.

  1. Chas Veshalom I would never want this to be taken the wrong way. We should always look out for our brothers and sisters.

But there is always the other side of the coin.

Many of the impoverished families in Eretz Yisroel aren’t paying taxes, they aren’t working and theu simply expect food to show up at their door. Even Hashem wants us to do our hishtadlus in helping to feed our children, its assur to create a lifestyle for ourselves that will not beable to minimally sustain our children. If people seem to be lacking food and THEY are inputting work and hishtadlus then of course they should be fed. Everyone should be fed! But people must try just a little bit.

  2. Our it sounds like you really know the situation firsthand like they all don’t work at all are intent on only taking money (in israeli media terms leechers or lice) and its all from their free will.

Bro the only thing I can say is please inquire by the defendents themselves 1) do they work at all? 2) in case they don’t, is it from their free will or is there any reason other than lazyness and careless etc they won’t work. 3) aren’t paying taxes, are you referring to income tax? Dependant on 1 and 2, this is totally irrelevant. 3) is the israeli secular govt allowing them to go work or is there perhaps a catch 22 hidden in the laws closet preventing them from working.
like today there was a report that in the us they pay more for taxes than for food clothing and housing combined.
    4) even if they are guilty of 1 and 2, the children are definitely innocent.

Please refrain from self made facts such as there is always the other side of the coin. This sounds like you have the proof for your following statements and more importantly have heard from the defendents their version of the story. In your statement it sounds very clear that you have heard only the plaintiffs version and are judge and jury on this case.

(pleases forgive me and correct if I’m wrong with sources.)

  3. HAVE brother with children in Eretz Yisrael children are working, father is learning, mother is working full time at job and can only afford bread all week and a little meat for SHABBOS. Their learning is protecting ERETZ YISRAEL
