NY Lawmakers Work Toward Adjournment

albanyNew York lawmakers are working to end their session with votes on scores of bills, though deals on medical marijuana and women’s equality measures remain elusive in the final hours.

The Legislature planned to adjourn the six-month session late Thursday or Friday.

Medical marijuana advocates hoped to strike a compromise with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who says he supports medical marijuana only in forms that can’t be smoked.

Meanwhile, a legislative standoff threatens to derail a 10-point package of women’s equality bills that include combatting human trafficking and helping domestic violence victims. Senate leaders oppose a provision that would codify abortion rights, but Assembly leaders have rejected calls to divide the package to allow separate votes on each provision.

Bills to raise the minimum wage and create broad public campaign financing appear dead.
