Israel Police Chief Orders Probe into Botched Emergency Call

31

Amid growing criticism, Police Chief Yochanan Danino has ordered a probe into the emergency call received by one of the kidnapped youths shortly after they were taken hostage. It appears the dispatchers disregarded the shouts “We’re being kidnapped” as a prank, delaying IDF and ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) involvement for 6-8 hours.

Danino said “I am not asleep” and promises a thorough investigation into the possible plunder, promising the public the investigation will be thorough and transparent.

It is alleged that the officer taking the call did not believe it was a real distress call and nor did another officer who was consulted. One attempt to call the number back failed and then it was forgotten until parents of the youths reported the disappearance of their children hours later. It was only then that police put two and two together and realized that was the call received at about 22:25 Thursday night the eve of 15 Sivan 5774. Only hours later, during the early morning hours of Friday did the IDF and ISA become involved.
