The head of the Shas Moetzas Gedolei Hatorah HaRav Shalom Cohen Shlita announced the murderers of 16-year-old Muhmad Abu-Khenin are halachically a “rodef”. The rav added “לבי שותת דם” after learning the Arab youth was murdered by Jews in an act of revenge.
The rav added עם ישראל התייחד לאורך הדורות בכך שקולו קול יעקב ואין ידו יד עשיו…
The rav stated that one whose hands are dripping with this blood have a classification of a rodef and one cannot possible imagine their punishment in Shomayim. “As the Three Weeks approach we must engage in boundless love in and out of our camp and in this merit may we be redeemed”.
In a somewhat different tone, in an address in Elad marking the end of the shiva for the kedoshim HY”D, Glad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel and Eyal Yifrach, the rav said “What is happening to us – the Arabs are hounding us and see just how many lies and untruths there are in the world. The Muslims slaughter their brothers in the thousands and tens of thousands, and the world remains silent. Here one Arab youth was killed and see how they all come out against us”.

One is called a rodef only while attempting to do the deed ,and is killed to prevent the deed from happening . Although these perpetrators would have qualiffied as Rodfim had they been busted planning or executing their ghastardly deed (for that would endanger all of Klal Yisrael) ,since now it’s done they are out of this category.

conan doyle, it’s not so easy to just remember what you learned in 7th grade apply it to a headline and be able to be cholek on gedolim.
The rodfim here created a situation where yiddin will be hunted and persecuted more than otherwise. That persecution is the redifah they are responsible for, akin to launching a missile and then saying while said missile is in flight im not doing anything now, yeah you are still responsible.

This remains: Once the deed is done the perpetrator is no longer a Rodef .Rather he is a Rotzeiach (murderer) to which a different set of rules apply. And yes: the same would actually aplly in your indiganant example of the missile . So you brought a perfect example that highlights your folly.
