White House Won’t Say If German Spying Claim True

obaThe White House says the U.S. will work with Germany to resolve its concerns over reports that a German intelligence employee spied for the United States. But White House spokesman Josh Earnest isn’t saying whether those reports are true or false.

Earnest says the U.S. is aware that a German citizen was arrested amid allegations he was purportedly working for the U.S. He says he can’t comment because Germany is still investigating and the issue relates directly to U.S. intelligence matters.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says if true, the case would be a “clear contradiction” of trust.

Earnest says the U.S. relationship with Germany is broad and very important.
