In front of a full room of news reporters, and dozens of television cameras rolling, horrible scenes were broadcast across Israel tonight, as supporters of Aryeh Deri stormed the Ramada Hotel where Eli Yishai was announcing his departure from Shas.

Riot police were called to secure the building and had to forcefully remove the protesters from the premises.

Protesters grabbed a large framed photo of Maran Hagon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZATZAL, which was set up to be as a backdrop behind Yishai. Reporters told the man he was stealing, to which he replied on TV “from Eli Yishai one is allowed to steal”. The Yishai campaign slogan signs were also torn off the wall.

Shouting matches broke out between the two sides, until police arrived to remove the Deri supporters from the building.

There were no arrests made.

Deri released a statement shortly after the incident saying “I am against such behavior which has so connection to Shas and its ways. I call on everyone to continue in the ways of Maran and act B’darchei Noam”.

  1. What a vanilla statement from Deri he should have angrily denounced the actions of these rabblerousers who bring shame to his campaign by acting like behaimas.

  2. It is a very sad day although I don’t think Yishai can be blamed for it fully. A sad day because most of Rav Ovadia zt”l’s legacy is officially destroyed. he built up the most powerful miflaga and look at what happened.

  3. Again, this is another example of what happens when you start up with the “insiders” of Shas. Its becoming clear that Rabbi’s Amnon Yitzchak and Chaim Amselam were correct in their assessment of what the “leadership” of Shas was all about. Yes, Yishai is getting a little taste of what he was part of. What a shame. They had such great potential for the betterment of Chareidim in Israel. That’s all History now. Their cycle is ending.

  4. #6, Not Getting Involved, you hit the nail on the head!
I’m Askinaaaaz and I feel exactly as you’ve said it!
    Sad day!
    Shameful!

  5. These are not true Sefardim. The way they dress, the way they behave is not connected to the Sefardi heritage. They only bring shame to us Sefardim. Good luck to Yishai, may we very soon see a Siyum haShas.

  6. Just kinda wondering if these guys are looking for a nice shidduch. Well, folks, there’s the resume, and then, there’s the video. Get my drift? Wishing them lots of luck. …and don’t call me as a reference.

Most Sefardim of Shas are ba’ale teshuvah or children of Ba’ale teshuvah (usually from the lower socioeconomic brackets)

    Thus..

  8. Before anyone starts pointing at “Sephardim”, as above, they should know that tragically, Machlokes is an equal opportunity offender. Ashkenaz Yeshivish are having a major unreal rift between Two major Gedolei Hador and their followers, the huge Ponevitch Yeshiva is having a major rift within itself, in the Chasidish realm, a Chasidic group in Williamsburg are at odds with Chasidic offshoot in Monroe, to name just a few.

Unfortunately, when you even talk about these Machlokeses and want to help heal them, you are attacked because both sides get angry at you, they will not allow it, so just accept this as part of the challenges of Golus, and look elsewhere for Shalom and Ahavas Chinam of which there is plenty.

Rather we should be looking at ourselves and saying, how can we bring the Geulah Shelaimah closer? What good act, what Chesed, what Mitzvah can I do? Don’t get distracted by the turmoil, instead watch a video of the Rebbe if you feel down, and you will be uplifted and motivated in a positive direction.

  9. Number 17- what are you saying? you think your group is superior in the Machlokes category? Are you not aware that there is a severe rift between the Ashkenaz Lithuanian Chareidi Camps between Degel Hatorah leader Rav Shteinman and the breakaway Bnei Torah faction of Rav Auerbach, and all the violence that has Occurred? Do you see what’s going on in the Ashkenaz Yeshiva Ponevitch? Don’t pin any one group, no group is exempt from this burden of Golus that is “Machlokes”, we all need to examine our own selves, and do good in our own worlds for those around us, that is all we can do.
