Degel Unlikely to Enter a Left-Wing Coalition

gafneSpeaking at an election kenos on Thursday evening 16 Shevat, MK Moshe Gafne told his Netanya audience that it’s most unlikely that Degel Hatorah will agree to enter a coalition with the left-wing. Gafne stated Degel never went with the left-wing in line with the instructions of Rav Shach ZT”L because the Gadol HaDor was concerned with the children in state public schools that did not even learn to recite Shema Yisrael.

Gafne spoke about the difficult period during the last two years when the outgoing administration targeted the chareidi tzibur on a number of fronts. He added “I am not trying to persuade anyone buy Yahadut Hatorah, primarily Degel Hatorah was at the forefront of trying to minimize the damage whenever and wherever possible”.

  1. Really now.

And if a left wing coalition (probably including the Arabs and Communists) offers to end conscription, and allow hareidi autonomy in communal matters (including allowing a non-zionist curriculum in hareidi schools), the hareidim will jump at it, include Degel haTorah and Agudah. Especially if a Likud-led coalition includes Lapid, and is planning to throw yeshiva students in jail and force hareidi children to attend zionist schools.

Fortunately, it appears the most likely scenario is a Likud led coaltion that will call off the war on hareidim, leaving Lapid and his ilk either in opposition or marginalized.

  2. Which Gafni should we believe? The Gafni who has been screaming and ranting for the past two years, who has been going around stating under every tree and in front of every microphone that this time UTJ will be seeking a coalition with the left, or this Gafni?
