WEATHER ALERT: Dangerous Cold Arrives In Tri-State Area, Subzero Temps Next 2 Days Could Break Records


colArctic high pressure builds in from the Midwest through Friday bringing record cold to the region. High pressure slides offshore Saturday morning with a weak low pressure quickly approaching from the southern plains. The fast moving low pushes a warm front towards us Saturday afternoon and evening. A low pressure system tracks well north of the region Sunday morning pushing a cold front through by late in day. High pressure builds in from the west Monday into Tuesday. This will result in extremely cold temperatures, dangerous wind chills, and wintry precipitation. Temperatures will slightly moderate over the weekend before again dropping on Monday.

Timing and Precipitation

• Saturday, snow, mainly in the afternoon changing over to snow and freezing rain Saturday night ending sometime Sunday morning. Chance of precipitation on Saturday range from 80% to 90%.
• Snow accumulation will be light (1 to 2 inches) before changing over to a wintry mix. Accumulation may be higher in northern sections of the city (BX, QN)
• 1/10 to 2/10 of an inch of icing is also possible in the city along with the wintry mix.
• A chance of snow and rain Sunday evening followed by a chance of snow after midnight. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.

Winds

Dangerous Wind Chills will impact the NYC area with low temps and associated wind gust.
Tonight: Northwest winds around 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Wind chill values as low as 15 below.
Friday: Northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Wind chill values as low as 16 below.
Friday Night: West winds 10 to 15 mph becoming southwest around 5 mph after midnight. Wind chill values as low as 2 below.
Saturday: South winds 5 to 10 mph.
