NY’s 311 Info Number: 12th Anniversary And 200 Million Calls


311New York City says it’s received 200 million phone calls in a dozen years after launching a 311 phone number to get information or lodge complaints.

The city marked the anniversary Wednesday with a release touting the service as the nation’s “largest and most comprehensive government information and services center.” The 200 millionth call came Friday, a heat and hot water complaint.

People call or connect online, reporting problems with everything from potholes and streetlights to taxis and parks maintenance.

The number was launched in 2003 to provide government information and non-emergency services. It has processed over 28 million service requests. Its busiest day came during a January 2011 snowstorm. The city says it serves over 67,000 customers daily through phone, mobile app, text, social media and chat services.
