Man Fatally Shot by NYPD In Queens; Weapon Recovered


guPolice say a man suspected of firing a gun inside a New York City bar was killed in a police-involved shooting after he fired at responding officers.

They say it happened after 9 p.m. Wednesday as officers responded to the Irish Hillside Inn in Jamaica, Queens.

Police say officers encountered the 30-year-old suspect as he ran out of the bar.

They say officers chased the man for several blocks during which the suspect twice turned around and fired at them.

Police say the officers discharged five shots. The suspect was hit in the torso, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many times.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He wasn’t immediately identified.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The following is a statement given to YWN by the NYPD:

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 2117 hours, police responded to a 911 call of shots fired inside the Hillside Inn, at the corner of 168 Street and Hillside Avenue, within the confines of the 103 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers determined that a 30-year-old male had discharged a firearm inside the establishment and then fled northbound on 168 Street towards Highland Avenue. Upon being provided a description of the suspect by 911 callers, officers encountered the suspect in the vicinity of 168 Street and Highland Avenue, and shouted “Police, Don’t Move!” A foot pursuit then ensued towards 168 Place and Highland Avenue, where the suspect stopped, turned and fired upon the officers. The suspect then continued southbound on 168 Place towards Hillside Avenue, where he again stopped, turned, and pointed his weapon in the direction of the officers a second time, opposite of 87-43 168 Place. Two uniformed officers then discharged their firearms a total of five times in the direction of the suspect, striking him in the torso. EMS responded to the location and transported the suspect to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The two officers who discharged their weapons were removed to North Shore Medical Center, for treatment of tinnitus.

The identity of the suspect is pending family notification.
