Hamas� growing influence on areas under PA (Palestinian Authority) control is evident in many areas, including the recent student union elections in Ramallah�s Birzeit University. Hamas scored a definitive victory over Fatah, with the latter identified with PA Chairman Abu Mazen. Hamas now holds 26 seats while Fatah remains in the minority with 19 seats.

Hamas officials in Gaza explain the victory is yet another indication of the organization�s growing influence among residents of PA areas.

With 9,000 students, Birzeit is the largest PA university and the victory for Hamas is also a victory for Islamic extremism over secularist Islam.
