Betar Illit: All the Girls are Assigned to Schools

beitarAfter a stormy week last week surrounding the assigning of girls to schools in Betar Illit, it is reported on Sunday, 5 Elul, that all of the girls in the Torah city have been assigned to a school and will be beginning the school year.

While some schools struck in protest over Slonim Chassidus launching its own exclusive Beis Yaakov, the approximately 20 girls who were unassigned to a school last week have been placed in an appropriate school officials reported on Sunday. Urgent discussion was held headed by HaGaon HaRav Tzvi Braverman, and the necessary decisions were made to assign all of the girls involved.

Mayor Meir Rubinstein visited schools with Economy Minister Aryeh Deri. They visited the new Slonim Beis Yaakov.

  1. This provokes am interesting discussion-no one wants to create a situation of heirarchy and snobbery by setting up exclusive schools. But there is also the side that a spiritual leader wants to educate his group in a certain way with emphasis on its rebbes and traditions …very difficult lines to draw.

  2. I get sick when I read the reports of this nonsense. The reasons for rejecting girls are generally arbitrary, and Rav Shteinman shlit”a accurately labeled these policies as “Gaava!”. I am thrilled that all girls have been placed. How do these 20 girls feel, now that schools have been forced to accept them? How will the schools treat them with the appropriate יהי כבוד תלמידך חביב עליך כשלך with having accepted them only because of pressure? I shudder when I see the unnecessary and destructive rejection our system heaps upon innocent neshamos. I wonder how they have the sheer chutzpah to do this during Elul, when we prepare for Yom Hadin, when we would hope we are accepted, not rejected. This news item is bittersweet.
