Rabbi Sues Manischewitz, Saying It Let Kosher Standards Slip

manA rabbi is accusing kosher foods manufacturer Manischewitz of pushing him out as its longtime inspector of holiday matzos after he complained it wasn’t sticking to strict Jewish religious practices.

Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz filed a lawsuit against the Newark, New Jersey, company Wednesday, days ahead of Passover.

Horowitz was the chief supervising rabbi at The Manischewitz Co. He worked for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, which supplies supervising clergy to independently ensure kosher standards are kept at food producers.

The union also is named in the lawsuit, which was filed in New York City and seeks millions of dollars in compensation for emotional distress and damage to the rabbi’s reputation.

The Orthodox Union says the lawsuit is “entirely without merit” and Manischewitz meets the highest kosher standards.

Manischewitz officials have no comment.

  1. “filed a lawsuit” sounds like they’re in court c”v. Please either fix the wording, or report what his heter is for going to court. Thank you.

  2. The last time I checked the Manischewitz company that makes the Matzah is a non-Jewish publicly held company. Rabbi Horowitz is an ehrliche yid who keeps halacha, aside from being a choshuva more d’asrah and talmid chochom.. We should give him the benefit of the doubt..

  3. The only thing that sounds a bit off is what He’s suing over not the fact that He’s claiming of not being kosher enuf but for personal reasons i don’t know either party i wish all please get along.
