NJ State Police Out in Force Over Memorial Day Weekend

The busy Memorial Day holiday is almost here. If you speed, drink and drive, or commit other offenses you better watch out.

New Jersey state troopers will be out in force on the roads, especially on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. The State Police say they will be all over the place this holiday weekend.

Troopers have written more tickets this year than last. From January to April 2010, troopers wrote more than 4,000 more tickets on the turnpike than during the same period in 2009 — a 20 percent jump. On the parkway, the numbers are up more than 10 percent.

Even though the state is strapped for cash, the Turnpike Authority says it is not part of a cash grab. Last year’s numbers were lower in part because traffic was lighter.

State troopers say they’re not writing tickets for the cash but to save lives. Over the Memorial Day holiday they will be going after infractions that lead to death.
