Controversial NYC Schools Chancellor Cathie Black is leaving her post, just three months after taking the job.
She’ll be replaced by Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, a Bloomberg administration source said.
The news was first reported by NY1.
Black’s surprise appointment last fall stunned the city and was met with a torrent of criticism.
The magazine executive had no education experience and had barely stepped foot in a public school.
She’s made a number of missteps since taking the job in January and has been slammed with abysmal poll numbers.
A NY1/Marist poll this week found that just 17% of New Yorkers approved of her performance.
Councilman David Greenfield’s Statement on the Selection of Dennis Walcott as New York City Schools Chancellor:
“Congratulations to Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott on his ascension to Schools Chancellor. I have no doubt that Dennis, who I have worked closely with for years in my role as a member of the non-public school standing committee and more recently as a member of the New York City Council, has mastered the nuances of education policy in New York City. He is a dedicated public servant and a clear-thinker with unimpeachable credentials, who will provide visionary leadership at the helm of the nation’s largest urban school system. I look forward to continuing to work with Dennis on education issues impacting all of New York City’s children.”
