US Billionaire Gives Yad Vashem Center $25 Million

Israel’s official Holocaust memorial says it has received its largest private donation ever — a $25 million gift from U.S. casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

Yad Vashem says most of the money will go to its International School for Holocaust Studies, which has trained thousands of non-Jewish educators from dozens of countries.

Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev said Wednesday the gift would give a tremendous boost to educational programs that have become vital to “preserving the memory of the Holocaust.”

Billionaire Adelson, the chairman and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. and one of the world’s richest men, is one of Israel’s largest benefactors. He also owns a leading daily newspaper, Israel Hayom, which is distributed in Israel for free.

  1. what a colossal waste of money. 25 million bucks could help out many good institutions for a long time. Yad V’Shem really doesn’t hurt for gelt.

  2. Unfortunately, too many of us Yidden feel compelled to criticize even someone who is good enough to make a large donation to a Jewish organization. Actually, Yad Vashem is a teriffic organization. When world leaders visit Israel, they are asked to visit Israel’s Holocaust Memorial. Most of them had no idea of just how much evil was done to our people by the Nazis, yemach sh’mom. Many become closer to the Jews and to Israel as a result of the visit. The experience for goyim is priceless, often leading to more support for us in many ways because of changes in attitude.

Mr. Adelson could have given the money instead to public schools, drug rehab or monuments, as other Jews have done. Instead of criticism, we should applaud him for what he has done.
