Elkin’s Number Two Attending the Toeiva Parade

While Jerusalem mayoral candidate Ze’ev Elkin said he would not attend the Toeiva Parade in the capital on Thursday, number two on his list, Fleur Hassan-Nachum, plans to attend the parade and other events in the city sponsored by the toeiva community.

During an event in the Geula Club in the capital on Wednesday, Elkin said, “I’m not going to be in the pride parade because that is me, I do not mean to deceive people, I’m not hiding anything,” Elkin said.

Earlier this week, Elkin announced in his own voice that he would not participate in the parade in the capital, as he had never participated in the past. However, he declared that his office would also be open to the toeiva community. Sources at the municipality are quoted by Srugim, reporting “now we understood what he meant,” hinting that Elkin was the one who sent Hassan Nachum to participate in the parade.

Elkin announced last week that he was adding Nachum to his list, a past leader of the Yerushalmim party, viewed as a being politically liberal as well as more pluralistic. Nachum holds the second place on Elkin’s list, obviously to appeal to the non-religious tzibur as well as young voters.

Nachum announced “I will march this year, however as myself and not as a representative of Ze’ev Elkin. Therefore, I did not ask or seek approval”.

Clearly, with such a person in the second slot, Elkin all but certainly has lost any chance of receiving the backing of chareidi voters, as he hopes will be the case.

mportant information for those eligible to vote in Jerusalem’s upcoming mayoral election…

3 of 7 Jerusalem mayoral candidates plan on attending pride parade

…MK Rachel Azaria, Ofer Berkovitch and Yosi Havilio all said they would be marching to show their support for the LGBTQ community. MK Ze’ev Elkin and Deputy Mayor Moshe Lion both said they would not be participating but did not condemn the event.

The ultra-Orthodox candidate, Deputy Mayor Yossi Deitsch of the United Torah Judaism faction, offered no comment when asked by the Walla news site if he would attend.

…Avi Salman, who is running on a secular ticket, not only said he would not attend but called for the parade to be canceled. He told Army Radio that he has very good relations with the LGBTQ community and was not opposed to a parade in Tel Aviv and other places in the country, but felt it was inappropriate for the capital. He claimed to be in possession of a survey finding that 90 percent of Jerusalem residents, not including the ultra-Orthodox community, were opposed to holding the pride parade in the city.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who is not running for reelection, has never attended the parade during his time leading the city, saying he did not want to offend the capital’s Orthodox population.

  2. To enter into a struggle for the kedusha of eretz yisrael we will need to be prepared for the long term…to be waged in the streets but also in the courts, the press, the parties in the Knesset. Rabbis need to be persuaded that it’s possible to prevale and all of this will require strategy, organization and money.

Personally, , most of my acquaintances do not want to go out and make a public protest of the “Pride Parade.” as they rather go into hiding until it is all over. That’s how they have felt every time . . But, we have a responsibility and there is no permission to shirk it. Some way, somehow, with God’s help, they will do what must be done. I hope everyone will, too.
Those so-called religious Jews who are appeasers to this lichluch are definitely NOT religious because they have NO Yirat Shamayim. Their whole religiousity is external but has absolutely no foundation

  3. Elkin, I had hoped was a more honest member of the Likud.
But I recently read that he said, claiming to be the only answer to a more pluralistic government (meaning non-chareidi), and
that a vote for the other dati-leumi candidate would be a vote for the hareidi candidate because the dati-leumi/traditional vote will be split.
This method of trying to steal voters away from the other candidate by creating a “fear” reminded me exactly to Netanyahu’s ploy in the last election where he stole many Jewish Home votes by claiming that the Arabs were going to the polls in droves.
These guys are not at all “pluralistic” but simply use more discrete methods (than Yesh Atid) to try to destroy the power of the chareidi tzibur. They are sly and they are sneaky.
Elkin is true to his master, who endorsed him for mayor.
Let’s hope he does not succeed, or it will be Netanyahu’s Likud having say over Jerusalem affairs, and that means capitulation to whatever social causes he finds politically expedient.
I think the dati leumi should let the religious politicians know that they will not tolerate anymore fratinizing with the socially liberal Likud and they should join (or form) another party that represents traditional people more fully.
