Israel: Second Serious Injury This Week Due to Sukkah Building

On Wednesday morning, a 35-year-old man was in the middle of building a sukkah on Eli HaCohen Street in Jerusalem when he suffered an injury from the electrical saw that he was using. United Hatzalah EMS volunteers treated the man for his injuries at the scene before he was transported to the hospital in moderate condition.

United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Moshe Mizrachi said: “Together with other first responders from United Hatzalah who live in the area, I treated the man for his injuries before he was transported to the hospital. He suffered a severe injury to his limb after being hit by a circular saw while he was working in his yard building a sukkah.”

This is the second Sukkos related injury in less than a week. Another man was treated by United Hatzalah vlunteers last week after he fell off of the roof of his building while trying to build a sukkah on Rav Ami Street in Bnei Brak.

Last month, Rabbi Sender Lipa Schechter from Bnei Brak climbed a ladder on Eliyahu Hanavi Street in Bnei Brak to prepare for Sukkos and fell. He was later Niftar following the incident. He was 80 years old at the time. United Hatzalah volunteers arrived to treat him, but they were unable to save him.

Following the Wednesday morning incident, United Hatzalah’s Spokesperson’s office issued a statement calling for all residents across Israel who will be building a sukkah this year to maintain a heightened level of awareness and adherence to safety procedures while they are building their sukkot in order to prevent personal injury.

“Please be careful when working from high places while building a sukkah. Always work in pairs when climbing a ladder and have one of the two people hold the ladder and balance it. Keep small parts such as nails, pins, and tools out of the reach of youngsters and make sure that Shabbos and Yom Tov candles are lit in safe locations inside the sukkah and not close to decorations or cloth walls.
