Internationally Known Kashrus Expert Is Niftar Suddenly

World-renowned Kashrus expert Rabbi Tuvia Hod-Hochwald Z”L was Niftar suddenly on Wednesday, at the age of 68.

Rabbi Hochwald, a resident of Petach Tikvah, was Niftar in London where he had traveled to attend a Kashrus convention.

He was born to Rav Avraham Hochwald Z”L who was the rav of Northern Rhine for many years as well as the Chief Rabbi of Dusseldorf. The niftar was named after his grandfather, R’ Tuvia Z”L who was a Chortikov chossid and served as a soldier in the Polish army.

According to a BeChadrei Chareidim report, his father studied in a yeshiva in Switzerland and then Yeshivas Chevron in Yerushalayim, where he received semicha. He also received semicha from HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L. He was involved in chinuch in Munich for many years, then rabbonus and then kashrus. He began his kashrus organization in 1980. His son, the niftar, took over for him.

Levaya details to be announced.

  1. Jersey Jew since when did the CrC list replace the Shulchan Aruch. Rabbi Hod ZTL helped Yiden in Germany and another parts of Europe keep kosher and was not only concerned of how companies his agency could invoice

  2. The Eida HaCharedit, B’Datz MeHadrin, B”Datz Yoreh Deah, B’Datz Machzekai HaDaat, B’Datz Bet Yosef NONE OF THEM APPROVE of the CrC . None of these groups rely on any American hashgacha as they feel they are all weak in their standards. I have heard it personally from each of these agencies located in Eretz HaKedosha.

  3. Daniel you raise a fair point. The agencies in Eretz Yisroel have pretty high standards in particular the ones that you have mentioned. They seem to work well with other agencies. Not sure what it is about Chutz L where there seems to be the need to ask other agencies or Kosherquest. Would you ask a Volvo dealership whether they approve of Toyota ?

  4. Edgesilber18,

When someone wants to know if an agency could be relied upon, that is where they look. They also look to other agencies. There’s no there there.

Who appointed them? Who gave them jurisdiction over any area outside of Chicago. They must have their favourites and those who owe them favours. It’s very easy to say not reliable. Anybody come out against rCC as being unreliable after their meat scandal Erev Pesach number of years ago

  6. I’ve just had a look at the CRC list and note that it excludes the London-based Federation of Synagogues which is highly regarded both in the UK and abroad. Clearly, the CRC list cannot be regarded as definitive.

Well spotted. They also exclude Machzikei Adass Edgware, Machzikei Adass -Manchester and Dayan Westheim.

Rabbanut Yerushalayim- Mehadrin to most is of a higher standard than many of the American Agencies listed.

  8. VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY AND REVIEW THE FACTS:

The top of the CRC lists clearly states it is not a complete list as there are over 1400 kosher agencies and further states:
The fact that a particular agency does not appear on this list does not imply that the cRc has determined it to be substandard.

    Directory of Kosher Certifying Agencies
    Last Update: 04/2/19
There are more than 1400 kosher certifying agencies around the world! For a complete list of Kashrus agencies (which includes both cRc recommended and non-recommended agencies) visit Kashrus Magazine Online (or call 1-718-336-8544). Special thanks to Rabbi Yosef Wikler, editor of Kashrus Magazine.

As a public service, the Chicago Rabbinical Council is presenting a list of common acceptable kosher symbols and their agencies’ contact information. The fact that a particular agency does not appear on this list does not imply that the cRc has determined it to be substandard.

Note: There are three areas of kashrus that require extra diligence and research even when bearing a recommended kosher symbol. These three areas are: meat, certified for Passover hotels, and cruises.
