Meah Shearim: Anesthetizing Bandit Turns Himself In

bandit1.jpgThe so-called anesthetizing bandit (reported HERE on YWN) has turned himself in to police, explaining to them he felt compelled to do so because he is not the guy they are looking for.

56-year-old Cholon resident Meir Even sat down to watch the evening news on Wednesday night and was shocked to see his photo being displayed as the bandit. He contacted attorney Eli Cohen and they contacted police, explaining he is turning himself in to prove he is not the man they believe drugged and robbed over 20 stores.

Meir’s ex-wife told reporters he is not “capable of harming a fly, yet alone drugging people,” stating emphatically she believes him.

Even or Cohen have yet to explain how his photo was taken from a closed circuit television camera and identified as the man.

  1. This is a classical Israeli con artist class one act whom the police will not fall for. What they will need is a little DNA and I’m sure they will get it.

  2. Dan Lkav Zchus.

    Dan Lkav Zchus.

    Dan Lkav Zchus.

How many times must this mantra be repeated?

And yet how many of us started jumping on him, questioning his “frumness”, all the while assuming his guilt.

Why? All because the almighty police and media declared him “guilty as charged”, by words and obvious insinuation.

    Lesson learned?

Next time someone is accused of something, anything, no matter how small or LARGE, ASSUME INNOCENCE! Yes, even if his “picture” is published.

A picture may be worth 1,000 words. 1,000 words of loshon hora and pure unadulterated sheker that is.

  3. #6,

The innocence was suggested to me by Mr. Dan Lkav Zchus. He is an old friend of mine that I met in the Torah.

“WE” are not entitled to hear this mans “allibi, his witnesses, their witnesses, the victims identification of the thief, and the whole due process.” That is the job of the court and its dayanim. They and only them. And until and unless they release a verdict stating otherwise, this man is as innocent as you and I.

  4. #6: Whoever said anything about the victims identifying the man in the photo as the perp? Nowhere in the story is such a claim made.

So you need not call the victims liars in order to provide the accused the benefit of the doubt. (Not that if a victim did identify him, we are absolved of still providing the accused the benefit of the doubt.)

  5. #6,

Additionally, why were you more concerned about claims of his innocence (as your comment makes clear), then of the obvious assumptions of his guilt — as others comments in this thread and the previous post on this person make clear? You hadn’t chimed into the conversation rebuking those presuming his guilt as you did rebuking the assumption of his innocence.

I strongly maintain that without knowing all the details, assuming a mans innocence is the epitome of “Dan Lkav Zchus.” Perhaps the blood of my ancestor, the Berditchever Rebbe, runs strongly through my veins.

  6. sammygol, you say its not (or may not be) sheker, but you haven’t answered why it isn’t lashon haro (even if true.)

  7. Why would ANYONE with BASIC COMMON SENSE ‘turn themselves in’, if they were guilty?,

wouldnt the better option be to continue remaining incognito for as long as they are not discovered?,??
