Shas chairman Aryeh Deri had to be rescued by the police on Thursday afternoon after a large group of extremists attacked him in the Bucharim neighborhood of Jerusalem.
Deri had gone to a shul in the neighborhood to deliver a shiur for a Torah learning program that was taking place as Israel celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut [as people are off from work]. He was spotted by extremists from Mea Shearim and they began to gather outside the shul and protest while Deri was inside.
Police officers were called to the scene and when Deri finished his shiur, they escorted him to his car as the extremists yelled derogatory terms at him.

Extremists??? They look like a bunch of ehrliche yeshiva yungerleit filled with joy that such a chashuvah felon and baal tshvuah had visited their neighborhood. (FYI: Deri was convicted in 2012 of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, and served a jail sentence).

It’s been said many times that our own brothers are our worst enemies. With the tzoros on top of tzoros that have been heaped upon the general world and the individual Jews, numerous Rabbonim have pointed out that whatever happens is for and because of Klal Yisroel. There have been Rabonim and Rosh Yeshivas who have strongly spoken of the need for Sholom bein Adam l’Chaveiro, and the need for this as a prerequisite to Moshiach’s arrival.
Simultaneously, there has been a marked rise of Anti-Semitism in the US as never before, and also in many other countries. We are also hearing in academia and politics, of the ridiculous assertions denying the Holocaust.
Hashem will we hope be merachem on us. But, how can we expect this, if we are not merachem on ourselves and on each other?

I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole group of people that are against Mr. Deri, maybe in the past they all davened to Hashem and asked Hashem, “Please send Mr. Deri far away”. Guess what, Hashem did not answer their prayers according to their wishes, so these Baalei Gaavah decided on their own, if Hashem is refusing to take care of Mr. Deri, then we will take the matter in our own physical hands and we do not need Hashem.
