The carrier has applied with the U.S. Department of Transportation for flights between Philadelphia and Tel Aviv. Service to the Israeli city would start in July 2009. The airline plans to use new longer-range A330-200 aircraft, expected to be delivered in the spring, for the daily nonstop flights. The route must also be approved by Israel.

“Announcing our first service to the Middle East is the perfect follow up to our London Heathrow service which began in March,” said US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker.

  1. I hope this works out. The problem is that inzir mentshin don’t understand the concept of driving 90 down the NJ Turnpike (a bit less than 2 hours). As far as they are concerned, PHL could be Chicago or Denver.

  2. comment to #1

Philadelphia’s (and Baltimore’s) airport is well connected to the intercity rail system, and if there was someone flying out of them to Israel, I’m sure someone would probably arrange a bus to/from Brooklyn and Queens. Avoid JFK airport might be a good idea since they have a serious congestion issue. Now if only some airports had kosher restaurants….

  3. To anyone who cares about avoiding unneccessary Agmas Nefesh on your trip (whether to Israel or anywhere else): I strongly urge you to avoid flying US Airways… We’ve had a few stories with them, and their response has always been horrible. Their customer service stinks and I feel bad for the people who will try to save a few dollars by flying with them…It’s just not worth it. As my husband recently said, “I don’t care if it’s $1000 cheaper, I wouldn’t fly with them” and, no, we don’t have any extra money.
In summary: Stay away from US Airways!!!!!

  4. Lakewoodwife—- Fact is, is that all the major airlines are a mess right now with them struggling to stay in business.Your story could have been on any of the major carriers. If this flight from PHL to Israel happens it would be a great alternative for people from Lakewood or Baltimore or even NY.

  5. Akuperma is right, an Amtrak train from Penn Station in NY to 30th St Station in Philadelphia takes only an hour and a half, and costs $45. From 30th St to PHL airport the train takes 15 minutes and costs $6. So it’s a tiny bit more expensive than getting to JFK, and it takes a bit longer, but it’s not bad.

  6. I recently flew USAir via Europe, and had the most horrifying experiences possible. Aside from ‘losing’ me in the computer, plus not having meals the kosher meals I ordered, USAir has the worst on time & lost suitcase record. Occording to Travel reports 6 1/2%. That’s 6 or 7 suitcases out of every 100! pAY THE FEW EXTRA DOLLARS, BUT DON’T FLY USAIR!
